Artists in Residence

The next round of applications close on September 4th, 2010 [pic: Joshua Holko]

Justus Jörgenson established Montsalvat as an arts colony and centre for creativity in all its forms. Montsalvat still fulfils this vision through its resident artist community and strong focus on events presentation and educational development.

The Artist in Residence program is an exciting new initiative, designed to provide artists with a supportive community where they can focus on their own artistic practice and research. Montsalvat offers free accommodation and studio space from 2 to 6 weeks.

Artist in Residence Program

The program is best represented through the spirit of our Mission, linking the areas of artistic practice, education and dissemination of the work, within what is “a living, thriving, creative artistic community. Welcoming to the general public, we aim to educate and promote local, national and international cultural practice.”

Artists are encouraged to focus on their work within an environment that encourages dialogue and exchange of ideas. Each month an informal session is held where they are given the opportunity to come together and share their work. Artists from all nations and backgrounds are encouraged to apply for admission on a non discriminatory basis. Affirmative action supports indigenous artists and those from a diverse range of backgrounds.

Artist in Residence Facilities

The Pool Studio, White Barn Studio and Sue Vanderkelen Room are available for artist in residence accommodation and studio space. A work area is provided, together with shared kitchen and bathroom facilities. Access to concerts and exhibitions is encouraged.

Residencies are available to a range of artists, including visual artists, sculptors, film makers, performing artists, musicians, composers, architects, writers, instrument makers and new media artists. Artists in Residence are encouraged to contribute to Montsalvat events and education programs and to mix with resident artists who live on site.

Current and previous Artists in Residence

The current Artist in Residence, occupying Sues Tower as seen above, is Barbara Long who said of her residency.

“Out of daydreams an idea surfaces to write the narrative of the life of a New Zealand Australian artist Godfrey Miller. He is the archetype of the artistic aesthetic exploring a philosophical landscape through colour and shape. To delve into this life, Miller’s mind, the opportunity to access a haven like Montsalvat is a gift of time and milieu.

This gift provides a setting in keeping with the platonic ideals that obsessed Miller and allows me the freedom to pursue the writing time that so often eludes me in day to day life. In conjunction the residency is richly layered with connections to other artists and the opening of new literal and figurative grounds for dialogue and creative development. To enter Jörgensen’s vision for a six week residency means my dreams have the promise of coming into being.”

Another recent Artist in Resident Susan Reddrop has this to say about her time at Montsalvat.

"My time at Montsalvat was spent looking at the gorgeous old steamroller that greets you when you enter the front gate.  I made moulds and took inspiration from its overall shape and individual components.  I am now converting the works made on site into glass, along with other pieces that evolved during my stay in the 'White Barn' Gatehouse studio.  I got to meet many of the other residents whilst there and learned much about the history of this amazing place through them.  I look forward to returning to Montsalvat with some finished work sometime in the near future."
