Angela Abbott

Artist and teacher of oil painting at the Montsalvat School of Painting

Angela was born in Melbourne, studied drawing at the National Gallery Art School, under Ian Armstrong from 1960-61. During 1966-67 Angela lived and worked in Central Australia. From 1969-73 she studied oil paintings under Shirley Bourne at the Victorian Artists’ Society and in the 1970’s painted and exhibited with the “Seven Painters” group, around Eltham. 

Angela was elected a Fellow of the Victorian Artists’ Society for contribution and services to the Arts and is member of the Melbourne Society of Women Painters and Sculptors. She is also a member of the Chelsea Arts Club, London. 

Angela’s first solo exhibition was held in 1974 in Melbourne and since then has had held many solo exhibitions. Since that time Angela has also conducted art critiques for art societies and judged exhibitions. 

Angela paints directly from nature and life, her subject range is wide and varied whilst particularly enjoying movement and the changing situations ‘en plein air’. 

Angela has received many awards and commendations for her work in mixed exhibitions from judges including Sir William Dargie, Louis Kahan, Elwyn Lynn and Fred Williams. In 1984 she was awarded the ‘Alice Bale Art Traveling Scholarship’ and was based in London during 1984-85, visiting art galleries in the UK and Europe to observe and relate to her own art experience. 

Her paintings are represented in private, civic and corporate collections in Australia and overseas. Angela teaches oil painting and drawing at the Malvern Artists’ Society and is ‘Artist in Residence’ as well as a teacher of oil painting at Montsalvat, Eltham. 

In 1990, by invitation, Angela joined ‘The Twenty Melbourne Painters Society Inc.’
