Nillumbik Prize 2017: Conditions of Entry
Nillumbik Shire Council in association with Montsalvat presents the Nillumbik Prize; celebrating contemporary works of excellence by artists with a Nillumbik connection.
Entrants must demonstrate a connection to the Shire of Nillumbik as a local artist or through a Statement of Connection.
1st Prize: $5,000 (non-acquisitive) for a contemporary work of excellence in any medium.
Two Commendations and a Montsalvat People’s Choice Award, each to the value of $500, will also be awarded.

Conditions of Entry
Entrants must be able to demonstrate a connection with Nillumbik Shire as a local artist or through a Statement of Connection.
A local artist is defined as either currently residing or working in the Nillumbik Shire.
Alternately, the entrant may supply a written paragraph demonstrating their connection or contribution to the arts heritage of Nillumbik. For example, the entrant may have lived in the Shire previously, been taught by a Nillumbik artist or paint here regularly.
Current employees of Nillumbik Shire Council and Montsalvat are ineligible to apply.
Finalists may be requested to provide identification
The work/s may be of any subject and medium.
The work/s must have been created in the 18 months prior to the 2017 closing date.
A work will not be accepted if hung in a previous Nillumbik Prize exhibition.
The entrant may submit up to two artworks. No more than one artwork by each artist will be shortlisted for the Nillumbik Prize Finalists Exhibition.
Changes must not be made to the work once it has been submitted. Should any changes be made after submission the organiser reserves the right to exclude the work.
To be eligible for selection the entry must be submitted by 5pm on 10 March 2017. No late submissions will be accepted.
Artists must provide high resolution digital images of their work with their completed entry form. These images must be in JPG format, and have a file size of no less than 500kb, and no more than 1MB.

An entry fee of $15 applies to every artwork entered into the Nillumbik Prize, including those not selected for exhibition. This fee is payable in person at Montsalvat, by cheque, or over the phone via credit card. Any entry for which payment has not been received by the submission deadline will not be eligible for selection. The entry fee is non-refundable and contributes to administration and handling of entries for the Prize. Please note that early payment is recommended. If the entrant wishes to pay via credit card over the phone, be aware that we often experience high volumes of phone calls in the three days before close of entries.
Licensing the work
The entrant warrants that the work is original and does not infringe the copyright, moral rights or other rights of any third party. The entrant indemnifies the organisers (Nillumbik Shire Council and Montsalvat) against any loss resulting from breach of these warranties.
By submitting a work to the Prize, entrants acknowledge that the organisers have the right to photograph and video all entries to the exhibition and that such photographs and videos shall remain the property of the organisers who shall have the right to use the images for exhibition, promotion or educational documentation.
By submitting a work to the prize, entrants grant permission for documentation of their work to be used in promotion of forthcoming Nillumbik Prize exhibitions.
Selection of works
Finalists are chosen by a selection panel and prize winners are selected from the finalists by the Prize judge. The Montsalvat People’s Choice Award is selected by members of the public visiting the exhibition of the Nillumbik Prize finalists. The Full Monty Award will be selected by volunteers and staff at Montsalvat.
The selectors reserve the right to exclude any work.
All works will be subject to a selection panel whose decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
All prizes are non-acquisitive.
Exhibition of shortlisted works
All entries must be available to be exhibited between 1 June and 30 July 2017. Selected works must be delivered to Montsalvat between 26 May and 29 May 2017. Please attach with the delivery of the artwork any special instructions/requirements for installation/arrangement of the work.
Media works need to be trialled on AV equipment before installation date to minimise technical problems.
Shortlisted entrants must attend the Exhibition Opening on 1 June 2017 at 6.30pm. If unable to attend they must nominate a representative to attend on their behalf on the night.
Works may be offered for sale and will be accordingly recorded in a price list with the sales status entered being a price or NFS (not for sale). This price list will be made available to visitors to the exhibition. Please note that the listed price must include the GST (10%) and the Gallery commission of 33.3%.
Parts of an artwork may NOT be sold separately.
Shortlisted 2D works must be mounted or framed professionally and ready for hanging with our wire-based hanging system. Montsalvat’s uneven walls and heritage listing mean that pins, nails, magnets or similar are not permitted to be used.
Please note that any works which do not comply with this will not be hung.
For display of shortlisted 3D work, we will provide plinths and/or glass storage units. If a 3D work requires additional display equipment, the artist will provide this.
Nillumbik Shire Council or Montsalvat will take no responsibility for damage to work during installation, display or dismantling of the exhibition. The participating artist/owner(s) is responsible for the following:
• insurance of all works for the duration of the exhibition including delivery and collection
• cost and preparation of 2D work for hanging
• cost and provision of any additional display requirements for 3D work
• delivery, collection and any associated costs of works entered in the exhibition.
At the completion of the exhibition unsold work must be collected on Tuesday 1 August or Wednesday 2 August.
If the work is not collected on one of the dates as specified above, a storage fee of $10 per day will be charged to the artist. If the entrant is unable to collect their work due to extenuating circumstances the storage fee may be waived, however the entrant must contact Montsalvat by no later than 28 July 2017 to make other arrangements.
Please note the Barn Gallery is frequently busy with openings, concerts and other events. Staff cannot guarantee that they will be able to assist with the collection of work outside of the specified collection dates if arrangements are not made in advance.
