CONCERT: Michael MacManus and Evan Hopkins

Artist, teacher and entrepreneur, Michael MacManus has established himself as an internationally recognised guitarist and a comfortable B&B host for visiting world renowned guitarists!
As a performer, Michael has been invited to give solo recitals at the 2014 Mount Beauty International Music Festival and appeared as a guest performer during the “John Williams on Toast” event at the 2014 Adelaide International Guitar Festival. Throughout April and May 2016, Michael undertook a 13 concert regional Victorian tour with generous support from Creative Victoria as part of the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music Guitar Quartet. In May 2016, Michael was invited to become a permanent member of one of Australia’s leading ensembles, the Melbourne Guitar Quartet (MGQ). This new appointment led to Michael’s debut at the Melbourne Recital Centre in July, performing with MGQ to a full house.
After completing a Bachelor of Music with first class honours, Michael was awarded a very highly competitive Australian Post-Graduate Award Scholarship to undertake his Master degree in 2015, majoring in classical guitar performance at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music.
Michael currently plays a 2017 Greg Smallman and Sons guitar.

Evan Hopkins is quickly gaining a reputation as one of Australia’s foremost classical guitarists of the next generation. As an international performer he has played throughout Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany and Spain and is a regular performer throughout Australia in concert and on live national radio. Evan has studied with many of the world’s leading concert guitarists and has played in masterclasses with David Russell, Manuel Barrueco, Slava Grigoryan, Tim Kain, Pavel Steidl, Ricardo Gallén, Paul O’Dette, Hopkinson Smith, Carlo Marchione, Alvaro Pierri, Zoran Dukic, Lorenzo Micheli, Florian Larousse, Claudio Maccari, Fabio Zanon, Roberto Aussel, Shin-Ichi Fukuda, Laura Young and Oman Kaminsky.
In 2016 Evan Hopkins was awarded the Mt Beauty Music Festival Clifford Hocking Scholarship. This scholarship was awarded to enable Evan to make the premiere recording of Nigel Westlake’s Sonata ‘Mosstrooper Peak’ for solo guitar.
Evan holds a Masters in Classical Guitar Performance (University of Alicante, Spain) and a Bachelor of Music with Honours (Melbourne Conservatorium of Music and Victorian College of the Arts, University of Melbourne, Australia). He is currently completing a Master of Music (Music Performance) at the University of Melbourne under the tutelage of Aria award winning guitarist, Tonié Field (Saffire, Melbourne Guitar Quartet).

In 2014 Michael and Evan co-founded the Melbourne Guitar Foundation. The MGF was established in order to develop performance opportunities for local guitarists. In addition to presenting concerts by international and local guitarists, the MGF offers students masterclasses, scholarships and competition opportunities.
