CONCERT: Rosemary Hodgson - The Pilgrimage Project

The Pilgrimage Project

The Pilgrimage Project is an intricately constructed musical journey, exploring themes of mysticism and person pilgrimage. Featuring two stunning solo concerts by local lutenist Rosemary Hodgson, the interconnected performances are inspired by Marian miracles and the famous ballad of Walsingham. In a world premier event, Hodgson has collected variations by seven composers to create a larger scale work of reflection and repose.

Concert one: The Angels Voice

In the 11th century the Virgin Mary appeared to a noble woman Mary Richeldis de Faverche in Norfolk England, and thus in Walsingham the shrine to the holy family was built. It became a spiritual destination for English and international pilgrims alike and remains so to this very day. When Henry VIII dissolved the monasteries in the 16th Century, a lament for the loss of this Holy Place was imbedded in a song whose tune captured the imagination of renaissance composers such John Johnson, Francis Cutting, George Huwitt and Anthony Holborne who feature in this program.

Concert two: Walsingham

Inspired by the famous English ballad, seven Elizabethan lute players wrote variations on Walsingham for the lute. Following in the tradition of Dowland’s Lachrimae and the Goldberg Variations, these sets by John Dowland, Edward Collard, John Marchant are woven into a meditative rondo by Australia’s premier lutenist.
